tanzania soda lakes

TANZANIA SODA LAKES
The soda lakes are alkaline and brackish, home to large populations of flamingos, storks, and herons. Bird-watching and game viewings are popular activities, but must be done from a distance as the soda flats along the lake shore are difficult to walk or drive upon. Still, a visit to the soda lakes of Tanzania is an unforgettable experience. Game still thrive along their unpopulated shores and the sheer ethereal beauty of the water, colored silver and white by the mineral deposits, is an unforgettable part of the African experience.

LAKE EYASI
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow endorheic soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau, just south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania. The lake is elongated, orientated southwest to northeast, and lies in the Eyasi-Wembere branch of the Great Rift Valley.

LAKE MANYARA
Lake Manyara is a shallow lake in the Natron-Manyara-Balangida branch of the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania. Said by Ernest Hemingway to be the "loveliest [lake] ... in Africa," it is also the home of a diverse set of landscapes and wildlife.

LAKE NATRON
Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, in the eastern branch of Africa's Great Rift Valley. The lake is fed by the Ewaso Ng'iro River but also by mineral-rich hot springs and is quite shallow, less than three meters (10 feet) deep, and varies in width depending on its water level, which changes due to high levels of evaporation, leaving high levels of salt and other minerals. The surrounding country is dry and receives irregular rainfall. Temperatures in the lake can reach 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit), and depending on rainfall, the alkalinity can reach a pH of 9 to 10.5 (almost as alkaline as ammonia)

TANZANIA BEACH HOLIDAYS

  TANZANIA BEACH HOLIDAYS.

One of the great attractions of Tanzania is its fantastic 800 km coastline with palm fringed beaches of white sand and the historic towns of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Pangani, Kilwa, Lindi, Mikindani and Mtwara, along with the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.
Swahili language and culture trace their roots to the Indian Ocean coastline. Many explorers, sultans and slave traders encountered Africa for the first time along this history-steeped coastline and contributed to the events that were to define modern Tanzania. The islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago became principal stepping stones for the culture that was to mould Tanzania’s people and their language

Beach holidays in Zanzibar & Pemba
Explore the most popular northern Tanzania game suncturies including Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire

Beach holidays in Pangani
Unlike Zanzibar and Dar-es-Salaam, Pangani is less visited and this makes it a unique place for a calm tour where one will enjoy clean water and white sand beaches.

Beach holiday in Kilwa
Kilwa Kisiwani was once the most famous trading post in East Africa. In 9th century the Swahili wealth owner of the island sold it to a trader called Ali bin Al-Hasan, the founder of Shiraz Dynasty.

Beach holidays in Mafia
Mafia is a wonderful little island at the centre of the largest marine park in East Africa. Mafia is an unspoiled, uncommercial, timeless island, where local people go about their traditional businesses apparently completely detached from the outside world.

Bagamoyo
Bagamoyo was the most important trading enter pot of the east central coast of Africa in the late 19th century. Bagamoyo's history has been influenced by Indian and Arab traders, by the German colonial government and by Christian missionaries.

WEATHER AND CLIMANTE

  WEATHER AND CLIMATE

Tanzania lies so close to the equator that seasonal variations in temperature are not extreme. The elevation in the north is such that it doesn't ever get too hot. While the weather is best between June and September, don't plan on seeing any animals in the Serengeti - they will have migrated to Kenya. September-March is a good time to go, but avoid April and May, when the weather is at its rainiest. As you approach the top of Kilimanjaro, temperatures can be well below freezing year-round, especially at night. Many of the northern wildlife reserves are about 10 degrees F/5 degrees C cooler year-round than elsewhere. Take along a heavy sweater and a windbreaker or jacket.
Owing to the country's widely varying topography, Tanzania's climate displays great range of regional differences.
The Climate along the coast: Coastal Region, Dar es Salaam, Limdi, Mtwara and Tanga, and the off-shore Islands of Mafia, Pemba, and Unguja is tropical with relatively high humidity. The average temperature, which is moderated by the sea breeze, especially on the islands, ranges between 27 and 29 degree celcius.
In the Central, Northern and Western: Around Mwanza Kagera, Kigoma, Shinyanga and Tabora, the climate is modified by highland plateau; low humidity with temperatures ranging between 20 and 27 degree celcius during the cooler months of June and August. The temperature can reach as high as 30 degree celcius and higher between the months of December and March.
Northeast and Southwest: In the mountainous areas of the Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Mara region and Mbeya, Rukwa, Iringa and Ruvuma, and Makonde Plateau (Newalla, Masasi, Nachingwea and Tunduru), the temperature occasionally drops below 15 degree celcius at night during the months of June and July. In the area around Rungwe mountains the temperature can reach as low as 8 or 6 degree celcius.
Central: A large part of central regions (Dodoma and Singida) is semi-arid, receiving less that 500mm of rain annually. In contrast, the mountainous area in the north-east and south-west receive over 2000mm of rain annually. Along the coast (Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Lindi, Mtwara and Coastal Region) rainfall ranges between 1000 and 1900 mm.
General: There are two rain seasons throughout the country: the long season from mid March through May, the short rain seasons falls during November, December, and January. The coolest months are from June to September, and the warmest are December to March.

TANZANIA HISTORICAL STATE

KONDOA IRANGI ROCK PAINTINGS

The area between Singida and the Irangi Hills contains one of the world's finest collections of prehistoric rock paintings, with an estimated 1600 individual paintings at almost two hundred different sites, the most accessible of which are in the Irangi Hills north of Kondoa. The most recent date from just a century or two ago, but the oldest are estimated to be between 19,000 and 30,000 years old, ranking them among the world's most ancient examples of human artistic expression.

KAOLE RUINS
Kaole ruins are located about 5 km to the south of bagamoyo town. The ruins dating back to the 12 century include two mosques, one with a well and over 20 tombs. All the buildings, including a house, were built in carved coral stone blocks. In 15th century Kaole town was attacked by Portuguese and forced into decline. Today Kaole ruins are surrounded by fishing and farming villages.

ISMILA STONE AGE SITE
Stone Age tools were discovered here in 1951. Many fossilized bones were also found in the area, among them those of a mammal related to the modern giraffe, but having a much shorter neck, and extinct hippopotamus with unusual periscope-like projections.

ENGARUKA RUINS
Mysterious ruins of complex irrigation systems span the area around Engaruka, the remnants of a highly developed but unknown civilisation that inhabited the area at least 500 years ago and then vanished without a trace.

MIKINDANI
Another central port in the Swahili Coast’s network of Indian Ocean trade, in the 15th century Mikindani’s reach extended as far as the African hinterlands of the Congo and Zambia. The area became a centre of German colonial administration in the 1880s and a chief exporter of sisal, coconuts, and slaves.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
Humans and their distant ancestors have been part of Ngorongoro’s landscape for millions of years. The earliest signs of mankind in the Conservation Area are at Laetoli, where hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years old. The story continues at Olduvai Gorge, a river canyon cut 100 m deep through the volcanic soil of the Serengeti Plains. Buried in the layers are the remains of animals and hominids that lived and died around a shallow lake amid grassy plains and woodlands. These remains date from two million years ago. Visitors can learn more details of this fascinating story by visiting the site, where guides give a fascinating on-site interpretation of the gorge.

This is the only time you will be allowed to move about the Serengeti during the hours of darkness and you may just glimpse some nocturnal animals, unusual sights and the possibility to take some very unique animals pictures and photos.
A hot air balloon floating over Tanzania's Serengeti Plains. Two Serengeti hot air balloons, capable of carrying 12 passengers each, fly once every day. At dawn they take off, rising as the African sun rises and floating in whichever direction the wind of the morning takes them. The pilot can control the altitude of the hot air balloon: sometimes taking you up to 1,000-foot altitude for a breathtaking panoramic view of the Serengeti plains or flying at treetop height, offering a unique perspective and great pictures and photos of the Serengeti wildlife animals below. More often than not, the early part of the flight is along the course of the Seronera River, an ideal location to get pictures and photos of some animals taking an early morning drink. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, cheetah, vultures, eagles, wildebeest, zebra, baboon, warthog, monkey, giraffe and pictures and photos of many other animals species is possible. The hot air balloon pilot will help you spot and identify the animals below.
From time to time, the pilot will need to put more heat into the giant hot air balloon, and there is a gentle roar from the burners, which for obvious reason provides the opportunity for stunning pictures and photos. Between burns there are periods of peaceful silence as you drift onwards. The whole trip is one long Serengeti pictures photos opportunity. You are travelling on a totally stable vibration-free platform with a unique perspective and nothing to block your view, which will provide you with a once in a lifetime opportunity to take absolute unique and great animals pictures and photos.
All good things have to come to an end and your pilot will let you know when it is time to put away the cameras and crouch down in the landing position. Once everyone is out of the hot air balloon, the cork is popped and the chilled champagne is poured for a toast on this unique African safaris experience and some pictures and photos to remember this great experience by.
After the champagne, it is off to the breakfast table, which will have been set up under a fine umbrella tree selected by the crew, close to the landing spot. Serving a full, cooked English breakfast with some tropical additions, "Out of Africa" style - a fine spread served on bone china with silver cutlery and crystal glasses.
Enjoy the food, the African Serengeti scenery and your companions' company. You'll receive your Serengeti Hot Air Balloon certificate before being driven back to your luxury safari Lodge or campsite, viewing game animals en route. You'll still have most of the day ahead for game drives.
NOTE: This adventure will fit in with all safari itineraries that include a night in central Serengeti (Luxury Serena Lodge, Seronera Lodge or Sopa Lodge or any of the central Serengeti camp sites).

TANZANIA TRAVEL TIPS

Tanzania travel tips

Tanzania travel visa requirements

All travellers to Tanzania require a passport, valid for the duration of their tour in Tanzania. Entry points to Tanzania, currently offering visa services on entry are, the Dar Es Salaam Port and Airport, the Kilimanjaro International airport, the Namanga & Isebania entry posts on the road borders between Tanzania and Kenya and Zanzibar airport.
Most nationalities can obtain an entry visa upon arrival or arrange the visa before arrival at the cost US $ 50 per person (USA & Irish passport holders US $ 100 per person.) Please take note some nationalities can only arrange the visa before arrival to Tanzania, while some nationalities do not require a Tanzania travel visa. We strongly recommend checking regulations with your local Tanzanian Embassy, as the above are subject to change without notice. We also recommend getting the visa in advance if you have tight connecting flights after arrival to Tanzania.

Tanzania language

English is widely spoken in Tanzania, but a few basic words of Swahili is always greatly appreciated.

Money / Tanzania currency

Credit cards and travellers checks are not widely accepted in Tanzania. Where they are accepted can high service fees and poor exchange rates be expected. Major foreign currencies - particularly US $ - are accepted in Tanzania and are convertible at banks and bureau de changes in the main towns and tourist areas. If bringing cash in US $, please make sure bank notes are in good condition, with no cuts or damage and are not older than 2004. Most banks offer higher exchange rates for US $ 100 / US $ 50 bank notes compared to US $ 20 / US $ 10 or US $ 5 bank notes.

Exchange rate

Use the currency calculator below to convert your currency to Tanzania Shilling (TZS).

Tipping in Tanzania

We recommend tipping your safari driver guide US $ 20 to US $ 30 per group per day. We also recommend tipping porters at hotels, lodges and drivers transfering you between the airport / hotel.

Tanzania travel and health

Yellow fever vaccinations are a legal requirement for entry into Tanzania. Please note you will require a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon your entry to Tanzania. We recommend that you take precautions against malaria (malaria only occurs in areas below 1 800m in altitude) prior to the commencement of your holiday. Adequate precautions must also be taken to avoid yourself being bitten by a mosquito. Kindly contact your closest Travel Clinic or medical practitioner.
The tap water is not safe for drinking or brushing teeth. Please only use sealed mineral water.

Tanzania Climate

Generally dry and hot with cool nights/mornings from June-October, short rains from November to mid-December, long rains March-May but the seasons can vary.

Tanzania travel clothing

Pack lightweight, washable clothes plus a sweater for early morning wildlife game drives, a sunhat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Long sleeves and trousers in light-coloured fabrics help discourage insect bites. Shorts for women are acceptable (but not too short). Women should carry a wrap to cover legs in the village and towns as revealing clothes can cause offence. Staying at a Lodge, bring your swimsuit along.

Baggage on safaris

Baggage on safari is limited to one bag, plus one small piece of hand baggage per person (excluding a camera bag). In total this should not weight more then 20kg. Suitcases and other heavier items can be stored in town hotels whilst clients are on safari.

Tanzania travel photography

Bring film and batteries for your camera with you. Protect your camera from dust and keep equipment and film spools cool. It is courteous to ask permission before photographing the local Tanzanian people. If you intend to take a lot of people pictures, be sure to bring an instant camera with you so that you can leave a picture with people you photograph.

Electricity in Tanzania

220v, but power failures, surges and troughs are common. Bring a universal adaptor and a torch (flashlight) or headlamp.

Tanzania travel security

Tanzania is a generally safe country but don't invite temptation. Keep your eyes on your belongings. Don't walk in the towns or cities at night - take a taxi. Don't carry cameras or large amounts of cash, beware of pickpockets and hawkers. Use hotel safety deposit boxes to safeguard valuables and obtain a receipt. Leave valuable jewellery at home.

Shopping in Tanzania

The Tourist areas and wildlife lodges sell a wide range of souvenirs, jewellery and trinkets. Don't be afraid to haggle at roadside stalls (Your driver/ guide will advise you where to shop and on a reasonable price). The most popular souvenirs are wooden carvings, curios, and a famous love stone which is the well known gem stone "Tanzanite" which are all widely sold at souvenir shops.
