tanzania soda lakes

TANZANIA SODA LAKES
The soda lakes are alkaline and brackish, home to large populations of flamingos, storks, and herons. Bird-watching and game viewings are popular activities, but must be done from a distance as the soda flats along the lake shore are difficult to walk or drive upon. Still, a visit to the soda lakes of Tanzania is an unforgettable experience. Game still thrive along their unpopulated shores and the sheer ethereal beauty of the water, colored silver and white by the mineral deposits, is an unforgettable part of the African experience.

LAKE EYASI
Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow endorheic soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley at the base of the Serengeti Plateau, just south of the Serengeti National Park and immediately southwest of the Ngorongoro Crater in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania. The lake is elongated, orientated southwest to northeast, and lies in the Eyasi-Wembere branch of the Great Rift Valley.

LAKE MANYARA
Lake Manyara is a shallow lake in the Natron-Manyara-Balangida branch of the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania. Said by Ernest Hemingway to be the "loveliest [lake] ... in Africa," it is also the home of a diverse set of landscapes and wildlife.

LAKE NATRON
Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, in the eastern branch of Africa's Great Rift Valley. The lake is fed by the Ewaso Ng'iro River but also by mineral-rich hot springs and is quite shallow, less than three meters (10 feet) deep, and varies in width depending on its water level, which changes due to high levels of evaporation, leaving high levels of salt and other minerals. The surrounding country is dry and receives irregular rainfall. Temperatures in the lake can reach 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit), and depending on rainfall, the alkalinity can reach a pH of 9 to 10.5 (almost as alkaline as ammonia)

TANZANIA BEACH HOLIDAYS

  TANZANIA BEACH HOLIDAYS.

One of the great attractions of Tanzania is its fantastic 800 km coastline with palm fringed beaches of white sand and the historic towns of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Pangani, Kilwa, Lindi, Mikindani and Mtwara, along with the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia.
Swahili language and culture trace their roots to the Indian Ocean coastline. Many explorers, sultans and slave traders encountered Africa for the first time along this history-steeped coastline and contributed to the events that were to define modern Tanzania. The islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago became principal stepping stones for the culture that was to mould Tanzania’s people and their language

WEATHER AND CLIMANTE

  WEATHER AND CLIMATE

Tanzania lies so close to the equator that seasonal variations in temperature are not extreme. The elevation in the north is such that it doesn't ever get too hot. While the weather is best between June and September, don't plan on seeing any animals in the Serengeti - they will have migrated to Kenya. September-March is a good time to go, but avoid April and May, when the weather is at its rainiest. As you approach the top of Kilimanjaro, temperatures can be well below freezing year-round, especially at night. Many of the northern wildlife reserves are about 10 degrees F/5 degrees C cooler year-round than elsewhere. Take along a heavy sweater and a windbreaker or jacket.
Owing to the country's widely varying topography, Tanzania's climate displays great range of regional differences.
The Climate along the coast: Coastal Region, Dar es Salaam, Limdi, Mtwara and Tanga, and the off-shore Islands of Mafia, Pemba, and Unguja is tropical with relatively high humidity. The average temperature, which is moderated by the sea breeze, especially on the islands, ranges between 27 and 29 degree celcius.
In the Central, Northern and Western: Around Mwanza Kagera, Kigoma, Shinyanga and Tabora, the climate is modified by highland plateau; low humidity with temperatures ranging between 20 and 27 degree celcius during the cooler months of June and August. The temperature can reach as high as 30 degree celcius and higher between the months of December and March.
Northeast and Southwest: In the mountainous areas of the Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Mara region and Mbeya, Rukwa, Iringa and Ruvuma, and Makonde Plateau (Newalla, Masasi, Nachingwea and Tunduru), the temperature occasionally drops below 15 degree celcius at night during the months of June and July. In the area around Rungwe mountains the temperature can reach as low as 8 or 6 degree celcius.
Central: A large part of central regions (Dodoma and Singida) is semi-arid, receiving less that 500mm of rain annually. In contrast, the mountainous area in the north-east and south-west receive over 2000mm of rain annually. Along the coast (Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Lindi, Mtwara and Coastal Region) rainfall ranges between 1000 and 1900 mm.
General: There are two rain seasons throughout the country: the long season from mid March through May, the short rain seasons falls during November, December, and January. The coolest months are from June to September, and the warmest are December to March.

TANZANIA HISTORICAL STATE

KONDOA IRANGI ROCK PAINTINGS

The area between Singida and the Irangi Hills contains one of the world's finest collections of prehistoric rock paintings, with an estimated 1600 individual paintings at almost two hundred different sites, the most accessible of which are in the Irangi Hills north of Kondoa. The most recent date from just a century or two ago, but the oldest are estimated to be between 19,000 and 30,000 years old, ranking them among the world's most ancient examples of human artistic expression.

KAOLE RUINS
Kaole ruins are located about 5 km to the south of bagamoyo town. The ruins dating back to the 12 century include two mosques, one with a well and over 20 tombs. All the buildings, including a house, were built in carved coral stone blocks. In 15th century Kaole town was attacked by Portuguese and forced into decline. Today Kaole ruins are surrounded by fishing and farming villages.

ISMILA STONE AGE SITE
Stone Age tools were discovered here in 1951. Many fossilized bones were also found in the area, among them those of a mammal related to the modern giraffe, but having a much shorter neck, and extinct hippopotamus with unusual periscope-like projections.

ENGARUKA RUINS
Mysterious ruins of complex irrigation systems span the area around Engaruka, the remnants of a highly developed but unknown civilisation that inhabited the area at least 500 years ago and then vanished without a trace.

MIKINDANI
Another central port in the Swahili Coast’s network of Indian Ocean trade, in the 15th century Mikindani’s reach extended as far as the African hinterlands of the Congo and Zambia. The area became a centre of German colonial administration in the 1880s and a chief exporter of sisal, coconuts, and slaves.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
Humans and their distant ancestors have been part of Ngorongoro’s landscape for millions of years. The earliest signs of mankind in the Conservation Area are at Laetoli, where hominid footprints are preserved in volcanic rock 3.6 million years old. The story continues at Olduvai Gorge, a river canyon cut 100 m deep through the volcanic soil of the Serengeti Plains. Buried in the layers are the remains of animals and hominids that lived and died around a shallow lake amid grassy plains and woodlands. These remains date from two million years ago. Visitors can learn more details of this fascinating story by visiting the site, where guides give a fascinating on-site interpretation of the gorge.
